  • November 21, 2004: A Fond Farewell! Congratulations to Professor Linda Mitteness, whose retirement party was hosted by DAHSM. Over 70 of Linda's long-time and more recent colleagues, students and cherished friends came to wish her great joy in starting a new life-chapter free of the institutional responsibilities that she so brilliantly undertook and fulfilled throughout her twenty-seven year career at UCSF. Linda's work took infant paradigm created by Clarke, Ablon et al and developed it as qualitative research in a way which managed to gain legitimacy within clinical research and amongst the basic medical sciences. The measure of this achievement was amongst other things the tremendous record she accumulated for extremely high level of grant recruitment.
  • An honor to Professor Joan Ablon. On November 19, 2004, DAHSM's Professor Emeritus Joan Ablon received the prestigious Mentorship Award of the Society of Medical Anthropology. This is the first time this Award has been made by the Society and we are thrilled that this honor should have gone to one of the founders of the department.
  • Thank you to Vincanne Adams for hosting the annual DAHSM faculty-student party. An evening of great conviviality!
  • A Success! The first lecture in the History of Medicine Lecture Series for Medical Students, sponsored by DAHSM and organized by Michael Wilson (MSII) and Melissa Braveman (MSII), was held September 22. Dr. Paul Volberding (Vice-Chair of Department of Medicine) spoke about The History of the HIV Epidemic in San Francisco. A stimulating talk and a turn out of nearly 100 students made it a great success.
The next talk will be Dr. John Tercier, Francis Fellow, DAHSM, on CPR, November 1.
  • July 1, 2004: Professor Dorothy Porter named Chair of DAHSM; Professor Philippe Bourgois served as Chair for five years and is now vice-chair of the Medical Anthropology Division, while Dr. Elizabeth Watkins is vice-chair of the History of Health Sciences Division.
