UCSF COURSE DESCRIPTIONS 2006-07 Gender in Science and Medicine (F) Forthcoming.
Emphasizing disputes within medicine, anthropology, and the biological sciences, this seminar surveys the history of racial science from early 19 th -century craniometrics to 21 st -century genomics. Topics include the Darwinian controversy, Anglo-American eugenics, Boasian anthropology, Nazi medicine, evolutionary genetics, the linkage of “color” and “culture” in multiculturalist discourse, and the collection of racial data by public health authorities. NOTE: Before our first meeting on Friday, Sept. 15, please read the following five articles, posted here as PDF files. Do your best to decipher the difficult technical passages.
